Narrative

Leander House, Inc. is a private not-for-profit organization founded in 1996. We are licensed and certified by the Department of Developmental Services (DDS) in Massachusetts. We are nestled in the heart of the Southern Berkshires in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. We currently have four homes serving adults with intellectual disabilities (ID). Each home is shared by the host family, 2-3 adults with disabilities and 2-3 full-time volunteer interns. We live as family and share life as a family would.

In the Shared Living home three people live with their Home Care Providers and two live-in volunteers. Two of these people were housemates for over 30 years with the same Home Care Provider and her family. The third person joined Leander House in 2011. This group lives and shares their lives as an extended family. The home is also a short walk from downtown Great Barrington.

Our day program is individualized to foster and support academic, vocational, social and life skills components. We take into consideration the interests, needs and capacities of each person. 
 
Activities may include:
  • part-time work in the greater community
  • academic and artistic classes
  • social events
  • farm work
  • fitness or therapeutic activities such as massage
  • therapeutic horseback riding
  • therapeutic movement or painting
