Narrative

UCP staff works together with the Department of Developmental Services (DDS) to ensure that people are assigned the residential setting that best meets their needs. We support the development of independent living skills, We encourage full participation in the community.

The Options for Community Living Program is a community-based supported living model of services. It is implemented to meet the needs of people with developmental/physical disabilities. People receive supports while residing in accessible apartments in eastern Massachusetts communities. The service model resembles that of independent living programs. Additional supports address skill areas which a person cannot presently manage independently.

Help provided is designed to enable each person to achieve maximum functional skill levels in areas such as:

  • personal care attendant (PCA) management
  • transportation
  • finances  (money and benefits management)
  • health management
  • household management
  • community access
  • self-advocacy
  • self-care
  • social/recreation

To prevent case management from becoming a form of dependency, staff intervention is limited to the lowest degree of assistance needed to enable a person to pursue independent living goals. The case manager’s tasks are purposely geared toward enabling a person to implement his/her initiatives. We are offering technical assistance to supplement skills affected by an person’s disability-related impairments.
