Narrative

Advocates Shared Living matches individuals with disabilities to members of the community who provide care at home, much like a family member. Individuals gain greater independence and opportunities for an active lifestyle in the community, yet have the support and companionship of someone who cares for them at home. Our team works closely with individuals and their families to arrange living situations that truly feel like home – we’re guided by their wishes, interests, and needs, and they are empowered to make decisions about where they want to live and with whom.

Community members who serve as caregivers in Shared Living are dedicated to supporting their new roommates in a variety of ways: they create a safe home environment, they encourage individuals to participate in the community and form relationships, they support their goals and dreams, and they assist with daily routines and activities.

Notes

Shared Living is funded by several Massachusetts state agencies including the Department of Developmental Services (DDS), Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission (MRC), Massachusetts Commission for the Blind (MCB), and others.
