Bay Cove Human Services Inc.
General Info
Narrative
Bay Cove has extended its continuum of care by providing specialized residential homes with 24-hour on-site nursing staff for people with complex medical needs and physical disabilities.
People who have significant and pervasive medical challenges related to their disability require residences which are fully handicapped accessible. These buildings are often equipped with ramps, fire doors, and sprinkler systems:
- sufficient space for durable equipment such as Hoyer lifts and track lift systems
- whirlpool tubs, accommodation for multiple wheelchairs or walkers
- ample space for assistance by as many as two staff in bedrooms and common areas; expanded laundry facilities
- adequate storage for medical equipment and supplies
The 24-hour staffing includes skilled nurses who specialize in the medically intensive care of this population. Staff have been provided training in administration of Gastrostomy Tube (g-tube) and Jejunostomy Tube (j-tube) procedures, on-site diabetic management, administration of insulin, and managing 1,500 doses of medication daily.
In addition, a core of adjunct providers who are trained in these clients’ complex needs— including doctors, physical and occupational therapists (PT & OT), and speech/swallow specialists—are available to come to these Bay Cove homes on a regular basis and as needed in emergencies.
Admissions Process
Admission to these programs is limited to referrals made by the DDS Metro Boston Area Office of the Massachusetts Department of Developmental Services. People must also qualify for housing support funding in order to meet rental costs.
